The French Riviera refers to the area that is known as Cote d’Azur and this area is located on the Mediterranean Coast within the southeastern corner of France. This area includes the sovereign state that is known as Monaco. There is actually no official boundary of this area; however, it is generally thought to extend from Menton in the east to Cassis in the west. This coastline is actually one of the oldest resort areas in France and it first started off as a winter resort as it was considered good for the health of people from Britain.

During the eighteenth century this area was popular with British people that belonged to the upper class. The railway arrived in this area during the nineteenth century and this enabled a wide range of people to get to this area. Due to the railway this area became a popular area with people from Russia, Britain and other aristocrats. Over the years there have been a lot of famous people that have visited this area and this includes Elton John, Pablo Picasso and Brigitte Bardot to name a few. This area is officially home to about one hundred and sixty three nationalities and there are eighty three thousand nine hundred and sixty three residents from overseas.

The French Riviera surrounds the area that is known as the Monaco principality and this area has a population of more than two million. This area is home to a science park which features high technology and also a center for technology and research that is located at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis. Thirty five thousand students attend this university and about twenty five per cent of these people are studying for a doctorate.

The French Riviera is very popular amongst people that are interested in cruising and yachting, as there are several marinas along the coastline of this area. Every year this area hosts a large event for fleets of super yachts and about ninety per cent of these yachts visit the area at least once during their lifetime. This area is very popular with tourists and due to its location it is able to benefit from three hundred days of sunshine every year. This area is home to about one hundred and fifteen kilometers of beaches and coastline and there are also eighteen golf courses and fourteen ski resorts within this area. There are a lot of options when it comes to somewhere to eat within this area, as there are about three thousand restaurants in this area.

Due to the location of the French Riviera this area is able to benefit from a Mediterranean climate. This type of climate means that the area has summers that are hot and dry and the winter months tend to be mild. The winter temperatures within this area tend to be moderate and it is very rare for the area to experience frost. During the summer the maximum temperature that has ever been recorded is thirty degrees centigrade.
